Animal Facility

NYITCOM's animal facility houses small rodents and zebrafish for research projects covering a range of areas in the biomedical sciences. Housing facilities for general maintenance and necropsy as well as operating theaters, it is staffed by animal care technicians and a veterinarian and is overseen by an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee that operates in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Student access is limited to students participating in related faculty-led research projects.

All faculty, staff and students who will be working with animals must complete both an online training course (citiprogram.org) AND a hands-on training session (scheduled through our animal facility) BEFORE they will be granted access to the animal facility. Please read instructions below for registering and taking the CITI Program animal use training courses.

All people working with animals in the NYITCOM Animal Facility or members of the NYITCOM IACUC must complete the indicated training modules (see below), provided through the CITI organization (citiprogram.org). You must register on their site to access the required coursework materials contained within.

To register:

  1. Go to the website and click on "Register" under "Create an Account."
  2. Under "Select Your Organization Affiliation" type in "NYIT" and select "New York Institute of Technology (NYIT)" (not "NYCOM/NYIT") AND click on the "I AGREE…" below that.
  3. Follow the instructions on each page to progress through the registration process.
  4. After registering, go to the "Main Menu" page and click on "Add a Course" under the "My Learner Tools for New York Institute of Technology (NYIT)" section.
  5. Scroll down the page to Question 3 and complete based on to which group you belong:
    • Group 1–Researchers
    • Group 2–Animal Technicians
    • Group 3–Students Working with Animals
    • Group 4–IACUC Members
  6. For each group, you must complete the required courses (listed below).
  7. People must complete the required modules BEFORE they will be allowed to perform any functions within the animal facility.

Reporting Concerns Regarding Animal Care and Use

Anyone who has concerns regarding any aspects of animal care and/or use in the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine animal facility can report the issues to the animal care technicians, the Chair of the IACUC, and/or members of the IACUC via phone, email or in person.

If desired, a person may report his/her concerns anonymously by clicking here. As required by law, animal facility personnel and management adhere completely to the NYIT Whistleblower Policy described on the institutional website under the “Confidentiality and Non-Retaliation” heading.
