The Center for Behavioral Health provides comprehensive metal healthcare to the entire NYIT community, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff. The center seeks to promote discussion and raise awareness of the community’s mental health needs through research, educational opportunities, and campus resources.

Our vision is to identify and meet the mental health needs and challenges of students in the health professions through counseling, psychological, and psychiatric services with a focus on:

  • Research
  • Treatment and Prevention
  • Reducing Stigma
  • Offering Hope

National Mental Health Services Specific for NYITCOM Students


The Standard Life, Accidental Death and Disability Insurance Plans provides the following 24/7 confidential services:

  • Telephone consultation with a Student Assistance Counselor
  • Three free sessions with a local counselor
  • Website with information on wellness and more

Any interested student should contact the Standard EAP by calling (888) 293-6948.

A counselor will work with the student to assess the initial needs and direct the student to an appropriate, local mental health provider.

Director, Center For Behavioral Health, Psychiatrist

An experienced and respected psychiatrist, Liat Jarkon graduated from NYITCOM in 1987 and has been in private practice for over 30 years. She specializes in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. Jarkon trained at Zucker Hillside Hospital and Schneider Children’s Hospital of Long Island Jewish Hospital (now Northwell Health). She received her M.P.H. from Columbia University prior to medical school.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Anu Raj is an associate professor, clinical psychologist with special expertise in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Comprehensive Behavioral Interventions for Tics and Applied Behavior Analysis. Dr. Raj graduated with a Doctor of Psychology from Long Island University in 2002 and completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Lisa Hoffman, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Psychologist Lisa Hoffman, Ph.D., has been in private practice for 19 years, providing individual psychotherapy for patients suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar, psychosis, OCD, relationship issues, and cognitive deficits, among other conditions. Her expertise includes suicide prevention, trauma, neurodevelopmental disorders, brain injury, cognitive remediation, and severe and persistent Mental illness (SPMI). She currently provides psychotherapy for patients at the Center for Behavioral Health at New York Tech and serves the Academic Healthcare Center in Old Westbury and the Family Health Care Center at Central Islip.
