Amy Bravo

International & Experiential Education International & Experiential Education

Amy Bravo, M.A., senior director of international and experiential education, was selected to serve on the board of directors for Let's Talk SAFETY (Substance Abuse Free Education for Teens and Youth), a unique educational environment focusing on substance abuse prevention, on November 2, 2020. This is the umbrella organization for the SAFE in Harlem consortium, representing 12 community sectors dedicated to youth drug and alcohol prevention, and The Pillars, a holistic drug and alcohol recovery and prevention organization. New York Tech began work in Harlem in 2016 through an initiative Bravo started called Building Resilient Communities. Since the partnership developed, New York Tech faculty, staff, students, and alumni have worked collaboratively with the Harlem community on STEM education, healthcare, architecture, and workforce development efforts.

Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D., dean of NYIT College of Engineering and Computing Sciences, Gordon Schmidt, Ph.D., dean and professor of NYIT College of School of Health Profession, Dan Quigley, Ph.D., dean of NYIT College of Arts and Sciences, Stan Silverman, M.S., professor of instructional technologies, Tiffani Blake, M.S, M.ED., assistant provost for student engagement and development, Jerry Balentine, D.O., FACOEP, FACEP, executive vice president, and Amy Bravo, M.A., senior director of international and experiential education, recieved their third Voya Foundation grant on Novemeber 2, 2020 to “Diversify STEAM Leadership.” The institutional team will use the grant to run community based initiatives to engage and diversify the community.

Milan Toma, Ph.D., assistant professor of clinical sciences, and graduate students Yaoyixiao Lu and Hanchen Zhou had their paper “Thresholding Segmentation Errors and Uncertainty with Patient-Specific Geometries,” published in the PubMed Central and Scopus indexed Journal of Biomedical Physics and Engineering on October 31, 2020.

Jonathan Goldman, Ph.D., professor of English, led a workshop, “Teaching Modernism and Activism Against an Ascendant White Supremacy,” on October 30, 2020 for the Modernist Studies Association's 2020 conference. The session asked the questions: How can the study of modernist literature draw connections between the early twentieth century and our own moment of rising racist extremism? Has the field of modernist studies historically contributed to ideas of white supremacy? How can our teaching address and resist white supremacy, now and in the past?

Karen Vahey, Ed.D., dean of admissions and financial aid, co-presented “Tuition Pricing and Discounting in the Age of COVID-19” at the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) annual Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) conference on October 28, 2020.

Shinu Kuriakose, D.H.Sc., PA-C, associate professor of physcian assistant studies, had his paper, “Mental Health and Pandemics: An Unhealthy Alliance,” published in Springer Nature Comprehensive Clinical Medicine on October 27, 2020.

Maria Perbellini

School of Architecture & Design School of Architecture & Design Architecture

Maria Perbellini, Ph.D., dean of the School of Architecture and Design, was a panelist at the New York City Architecture Biennial Conference on October 23, 2020. She was part of a session on “Social Inclusion in the Workplace and in Design.”

Luzia Ogureck

International & Experiential Education International & Experiential Education

Luzia Ogureck, M.A., associate director of experiential education, received an “Excellence Award from NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education” for New York Tech's signature volunteering program. Ogureck was mentored by Adrienne McNally and Amy Bravo in the oversight of the Consultants for the Public Good program. Her blog post about the program, “What’s in a name? Quite a lot, when pitching volunteerism to STEM majors,” was published on the NASPA website on October 23, 2020.

Steven Shapiro

School of Management School of Management Finance

Steven J. Shapiro, Ph.D., professor of accounting and finance, and Peter Harris, professor of accounting and finance, co-authored a publication with Umapathy Ananthanarayanan, “The Impact of New Lease Standards Under US GAAP and IFRS on Financial Ratios,” published by the Review of Business and Finance Studies on October 22, 2020.
