New York Institute of Technology is positioned as one of the innovative organizations answering the call for eSports related health care by offering gamers nutritional guidance, body composition testing, and customized chair-sizing, among many other services.

 

Nizich Writes on Defense Technology in CIO Review

In a special edition of CIO Review focusing on the defense industry, Michael Nizich, Ph.D., director of the Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation Center and an adjunct assistant professor of computer science, contributed an article about defense tech trends.

While referencing technology including autonomous military vehicles, intelligent drones, and missile defense systems, Nizich writes it is more important to discuss several underlying technologies that are components of these and other systems. “The technologies I am referring to are both Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) and Blockchain technology known primarily from its emergence as the supporting infrastructure of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency.”

 

Haar Warns Consumers Not to Overconsume Coconut Oil in Taste of Home

Comments on coconut oil from NYIT School of Health Professions' Mindy Haar, Ph.D., have been circulated by cooking magazine Taste of Home. In the story “19 ‘Healthy’ Food Rules Nutrition Experts Ignore All the Time,” which originally appeared in Reader’s Digest, Haar notes that while the oil is promoted as a superfood, it still contains high levels of saturated fat, and consumers should be mindful before adding to their meals.

“At the end of the day, coconut oil is still a saturated fat—not to mention highly caloric!” she says. “I think olive oil, a monounsaturated fat, is a much better choice.”

 

Newsday Recaps 58th Annual Commencement

Newsday (subscription required) covered New York Institute of Technology’s 58th annual commencement with a recap highlighting the day’s events and the bright future of the Class of 2019.

Quotes included words of advice from NYIT President Henry “Hank” C. Foley, Ph.D. and honorary degree recipient Kevin D. Silva, executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Voya Financial, Inc., and chairman of NYIT's board of trustees. Student coverage included interviews with four graduates and moving words from the student orator, Gabrielle Redding, a Bachelor of Architecture degree candidate who will attend the Harvard Graduate School of Design in September.

"One of the biggest things NYIT taught me is that sometimes in life, it is OK to get humble and ask for help. It's in those moments when we have the greatest chance to grow," said Redding.

Anid’s profile emphasizes New York Institute of Technology’s role in promoting opportunities for women and minorities, while also showcasing her many successes including her instrumental role in founding the Women’s Corporate Council.

 

Zwibel Shares Hydration Advice in Huffington Post

Hallie Zwibel, D.O., director, NYIT Center for Sports Medicine, provided hydration advice for a Huffington Post article on the dangers of alcohol in summer heat. Zwibel urges readers to be conscious of their alcohol intake during summer months, as alcohol is a diuretic and strips the body of fluid.

“Alcohol causes the kidneys to release more water through urine than we would normally,” says Zwibel. “So now you’re losing water through sweat [from the heat] and urine, which can make you dehydrated and unable to cool down.”

He also informed readers to be aware that they may not feel thirsty or dehydrated because they’re drinking, and recommended having a glass of water every 30 minutes to help continually replenish any lost fluids.

New York Institute of Technology welomes seasoned higher education administrator Joseph Posillico, Ed.D., C.P.A., who joins the institution as the new vice president for enrollment management. Posillico's appointment has been publicized in several local and regional publications, including Newsday, Long Island Business News, and The Island Now (subscriptions required).

“I was drawn by the vision of Dr. Foley and the mission of NYIT. I was impressed by the academic programs, the quality of the offerings and the fact that what students and parents desire most in a quality education truly exists here at NYIT,” said Posillico in The Island Now.

LIBN Covers New NSF-Funded Scholarships

Long Island Business News reported the news of NYIT’s two new National Science Foundation-funded scholarships promoting STEM education. The article mentions the larger grant, based in the Department of Teacher Education, in these terms: “The $1.2 million grant will support a Master of Arts in Teaching program that is designed to produce culturally sensitive, project-based teachers who can teach in underprivileged areas and get the next generation excited about STEM careers.” It also describes the other sizable grant, which will “provide four years of scholarship assistance for low-income undergraduates” majoring in computer science or electrical and computer engineering.

In the story, Haar acknowledges the growing popularlity of plant-based diets. She notes, “Recent food trends have increased the consumption of avocado, kale, and quinoa… all wonderful nutrient-dense foods that should not be given up. This year, dandelion greens, rainbow carrots, beets, and amaranth are the new popular kids on the block.”
