John Handrakis
School of Health Professions School of Health Professions Physical TherapyJohn Handrakis, D.P.T., Ed.D., professor of physical therapy, joined an international panel of experts on the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) webinar series to present their committees’ findings and 2020 revisions to the International Standards to Document Autonomic Function after SCI (ISAFSCI), on July 31,2020. Handrakis chairs the temperature regulation and autonomic control of sweating sub-committees. The webinar was streamed live and attended by over 150 registered participants representing 22 countries.
Houwei Cao
College of Engineering & Computing SciencesHouwei Cao, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science, received a National Science Foundation Award for her proposal, "EAGER: Towards Adaptive and Robust Multimodal Emotion Recognition In-the-Wild," on July 30, 2020. The one-year grant, which runs from August 1, 2020, through July 31, 2021, has a total intended award amount of $99,916.

College of Arts & Sciences College of Arts & Sciences EnglishAmanda Golden, Ph.D., associate professor of English, discussed her book, Annotating Modernism, with the New York City Irish Studies Symposium as part of an event called "Sylvia Plath and Irish Modernism," on July 27, 2020.
Pejman Sanaei
College of Arts & Sciences College of Arts & Sciences MathPejman Sanaei, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, had a research paper, “Effects of Particles Diffusion on Membrane Filters Performance,” published in MDPI on July 24, 2020. He worked on this paper along with his former students Shi Yue Liu and Zhengyi Chen at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.
Sarah Meyland
College of Engineering & Computing Sciences College of Engineering & Computing Sciences Environmental Technology & SustainabilitySarah Meyland, M.S., J.D., associate professor of environmental technology and sustainability, was quoted in "How LI homebuyers can learn about their water quality," an article by Rachel O'Brien published in Newsday on July 23, 2020. She spoke about how homeowners should know about drinking water quality and how they can find out more if they are concerned about their water quality.

College of Arts & Sciences College of Arts & Sciences EnglishKevin LaGrandeur, Ph.D., professor of English, was appointed to the advisory board of The Lifeboat Foundation, a technology-oriented think tank, on July 22, 2020. "The Lifeboat Foundation is developing a world-class think tank with a rich cognitive diversity of... top thinkers to encourage scientific advancements while helping humanity survive existential risks and possible misuse of increasingly powerful technologies."

College of Arts & Sciences College of Arts & Sciences EnglishKevin LaGrandeur, Ph.D., professor of English, was appointed to the editorial board of the new refereed journal The Journal of Posthumanism on July 20, 2020. "The Journal of Posthumanism is an international multilingual peer-reviewed scholarly journal promoting innovative work to transverse the fields ranging from social sciences, humanities, and arts to medicine and STEM. In line with the efforts of creating a broad network beyond disciplinary boundaries, the journal seeks to explore what it means to be human in this technologically-saturated, ecologically damaged world."
Milan Toma
College of of Osteopathic Medicine Department of Osteopathic Manipulative MedicineMilan Toma, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering, published paper in Biology titled "Effect of Edge-to-Edge Mitral Valve Repair on Chordal Strain: Fluid-Structure Interaction Simulations," on July 18, 2020. The paper demonstrates the potential for computational simulations to aid in the pre-procedural evaluation of possible complications such as chordal rupture and leaflet perforation following percutaneous edge-to-edge repair.
Jamel Vanderburg
College of Arts & Sciences College of Arts & Sciences Interdisciplinary StudiesJamel Vanderburg, M.P.A., adjunct instructor of interdisciplinary studies, served as a co-moderator on a panel entitled "Breaking Barriers: A Virtual Roundtable Discussing Racial Disparities in America," on July 12, 2020. The roundtable came out a discussion between Vanderburg and his co-moderators Andrew Oliver, senior project manager for Empire State Development and Kanell Harvard, an event planner with Dhat’s a Trip, about how to navigate racial issues in the current climate.
