Melda Yildiz
College of Arts & Sciences Instructional TechnologyMelda N. Yildiz, Ed.D., assistant professor and chair of the Department of Instructional Technology, co-authored the book, Promoting Global Competencies Through Media Literacy, published November 2017. It is an advanced reference publication featuring the latest scholarly research on transdisciplinary and transformative assessment practices from primary-level to university-level educational settings.
Nicholas Bloom
College of Arts & Sciences, Social SciencesNicholas Bloom, Ph.D., associate professor of social sciences, had his work cited in "Thinking Small," an article about the future of so-called micro-units published in the political journal Jacobin in November 2017. In that same month, Bloom was quoted in an article in the Gotham Gazette entitled, "De Blasio's Record on NYCHA."
Colleen Kirk
School of Management, MarketingColleen P. Kirk, D.P.S., assistant professor of marketing, authored a chapter entitled "When Good Fences Make Good Customers: Exploring Psychological Ownership and Territoriality in Marketing" for the book Theoretical Orientations and Practical Applications of Psychological Ownership. The book, edited by Olckers, van Zyl, and van der Vaart, was published by Springer on November 29, 2017. Kirk's chapter explores the little-understood implications of territoriality in marketing, with a view of territoriality that extends well beyond physical spaces to the boundaries of the extended self. She sheds light on the important contribution territoriality can make to understanding both consumers and marketers alike.
School of Management Global Center for Hospitality Management
School of ManagementNYIT School of Management Global Center for Hospitality Management received the Industry Advancement Award at Discover Long Tourism Award celebration, held in November 2017. The award honors an educational institution, initiative, or effort that fosters a significant understanding of the value of tourism, promoting the industry as an economic driver, or fostering future talent for the industry. Robert Koenig, Ed.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Hospitality Management, and Alan Fairbairn, M.A., associate professor of hospitality management, accepted the award on behalf of the Center. The ceremony also featured guest speaker and fellow award recipient, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Sheldon Fields
School of Health ProfessionsSheldon D. Fields, Ph.D., dean of the School of Health Professions, was appointed to the board of directors of the National Black Nurses Association, based in Silver Spring, MD, in November 2017. Also in November, Fields was selected as a 2018 Medal of Distinguished Service recipient by the Binghamton University Alumni Association for his work over several years, especially with the university's Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).
Michael Nizich
School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, Computer ScienceMichael Nizich, Ph.D., adjunct assistant professor of computer science and director of the Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation Center (ETIC), received an award as "a staff member who exemplifies leadership, mentorship, and who has demonstrated commitment to bettering the lives of students" by The National Society of Leadership and Success, Sigma Alpha Pi. Nizich was nominated for the award by NYIT student members of the organization.
Terry Nauheim Goodman
College of Arts and Sciences, Digital Art and DesignTerry Nauheim Goodman, M.F.A., associate professor and chair of the Department of Digital Art and Design, was recently voted onto the Abilities Board of Directors at the Viscardi Center in Albertson, NY. Abilities, Inc. prepares adolescents and adults with all types of disabilities (cognitive, physical, learning, developmental) and levels of experience for entry or re-entry into the workforce by assisting them in securing pre-employment services as well as employment so that they can enjoy independent living, full community participation, and economic self-sufficiency.
Kevin LaGrandeur
College of Arts & Sciences, EnglishKevin LaGrandeur, Ph.D., professor of English, gave a presentation on the use of gaming technology in contemporary art entitled, "Game-ification of Art and the Posthuman," at the annual conference of the Society for Literature, Science and the Arts, held in Phoenix, AZ, November 9–12.
John Misak
College of Arts & Sciences EnglishJohn Misak, D.A., assistant professor of English, delivered a presentation, "Using Virtual Reality to Illustrate Sense of Place for Student Personal Narratives," at the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association 115th Annual Conference, November 10-12, 2017, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Kevin LaGrandeur
College of Arts & Sciences, EnglishKevin LaGrandeur, Ph.D., professor of English, was recently awarded an NEH grant to participate in an Object Lessons writer's workshop to teach academics—particularly those whose subject is technology—how to write for the popular press. The workshop was held November 7–8, 2017, in Phoenix, AZ.
