Career Development
New York Tech Career Guidance
New York Tech offers students multiple career counseling resources through the Office of Career Success and Experiential Education (CSEE). Students meet with career advisors who assist them in examining their career aspirations and help them in the consideration of career choices. Continued outreach efforts keep students connected to career advising and evaluation tasks.
CSEE offers workshops targeting activities relevant to their career opportunities and related to their field of study are offered, focusing attention on specific activities and skills needed in future job searches. Employer guest speakers and professionals participate in on-site company visits and are invited to on-campus job, internship, and portfolio career fairs and workshops throughout the year. A significant number of students are employed by members of the faculty or are recommended by faculty members for positions in the metropolitan New York area.
In addition, CSEE hosts a free online job and internship posting service for employers of all disciplines to search for talented students and alumni. Students are encouraged to post their resumé and cover letters on Handshake for review by professional New York Tech career counselors while employers are encouraged to post their open positions.
Professional Internships/Externships
Alumni & FRIENDS
Our students benefit from a large and engaged community of passionate alumni and talented professionals who comprise the Alumni and FRIENDS of the School of Architecture and Design. This community, cultivated through the consistent efforts of the dean, provides generous financial support to students in need throughout their academic journey, offers valuable mentoring, and creates opportunities for internships, externships, and job placements while students are in school. Many also help graduates secure employment and advance their careers after graduation.
Professional Opportunities
The school regularly educates students about the numerous professional opportunities and career paths available, including internships/externships and licensure. This information is delivered through guest lecturers and class visits by representatives of professional organizations (e.g., NCARB, AIA, ENYNA, IFMA, CMAA, IIDA, USGBC etc.), firm visits (e.g., BIG, Morphosis, OMA, SOM, Ted Moudis, HLW, RAMSA, Gensler, AECOM, H2M, Smiros and Smiros, JRS, MVRDV, Perkins Eastman, HOK, Bentel and Bentel, Verderame Associates, John DiDomenico, Kohn, Pederson and Fox, etc.), and career services events and lectures, (e.g., alumni panelists, career fairs, portfolio reviews, in-class resume, and LinkedIn boot camps, etc.).
The New York Tech Student-Led Architecture Build (sLAB) program and student groups such as AIAS, NOMAS, and Freedom by Design also explore and highlight professional opportunities.
Externships & Internships
The B.Arch. and M.Arch. programs also offer a cumulative sequence of three-credit elective externship courses under the supervision of a licensed architect. The programs typically place 20–30 students each year in professional offices. Externship students are paid while observing architectural practice firsthand, receiving mentorship and evaluation from a registered architect, many of whom are members of the School of Architecture and Design Friends and Alumni network.
The externship program is administered by a full-time faculty member who monitors compliance with the program’s criteria and procedures. International students can also apply for an internship as part of Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
Professional Societies
American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS)
The New York Tech chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) has representation on both campuses. Each year, AIAS officers conduct a recruitment drive among incoming students to ensure school-wide representation and maintain continuity from year to year. New York Tech’s Student Government Association supports AIAS-related activities, including field trips, lecture series, competitions, Convergence NYC, and other social events. In addition, student chapter members contribute to the school by serving in leadership roles on the university’s Student Affairs Committee.
Students regularly attend the AIAS National Convention as well as the annual AIA Product Fair. The AIAS Peer Mentoring Program also helps first-year students succeed at New York Tech by connecting freshmen with upper-class peer mentors in their major.
National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA)
The longstanding National Organization of Minority Architects Student chapter was founded in 2021 and organizes lectures and symposia on the topic of diversity and inclusion in the profession.
AXP Credits & Licensure
The Architectural Licensing Advisor and AXP program provides degree candidates with a structured transition between education and registration, and helps students understand when they are eligible to enroll in AXP. All architecture students are introduced at the beginning of their academic path to NCARB and the licensing process. In addition, each year, the AIAS invites representatives from the NCARB and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of the Professions to meet with students in workshop sessions about the AXP, registration, and licensure requirements in New York State. Details about their AXP Credits show that 56 percent of our recent alumni have completed or are on the way to completing their Architecture Experience Program. In terms of their path to licensure, 44 percent of them received or are going to complete it.
Alumni Feedback
The most recent survey of recent school alumni collects post-graduation feedback about program outcomes and preparation for their first jobs. Ninety-five percent of respondents reported being employed or a continuing student, while ninety percent felt prepared for their first jobs.
