Definition

Honorarium: A one-time payment of a nominal amount made to an individual, as an expression of gratitude for a personal service or expertise provided by the individual, for a special and non-recurring activity or event with a short duration for which a fee is not legally or customarily required and where compensation is not requested.

Policy

NYITCOM Faculty Honoraria for NYITCOM CME Activities

If you are a presenter or planner in CME activities provided by NYITCOM that are considered part of routine faculty duties, during normal working hours, no honoraria will be provided. (Refer to employee handbook.)

Honoraria for Non-NYITCOM Faculty

The honorarium for a guest faculty member will typically be set by NYITCOM based upon the recommendation of course directors and/or the NYITCOM CME Committee.

The amount of the honoraria should be reasonable, and based upon:

  • Importance of the presenter to the educational goals and objectives of the program.
  • Reputation, expertise, and CV of proposed faculty member(s).
  • Time required away from their home institution to join the faculty of the program.
  • Funds available from grants and/or institutions.  However, the amount of honoraria should not be influenced by representatives of industry or other financial contributors to activities.
  • Possible effect on honoraria for other faculty,

All these considerations will be used to negotiate fair honoraria for the guest faculty.   The honoraria payment range is $0 – $2,500.   Honorarium payments above the maximum must be approved by the Dean of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Additional reimbursement: Reimbursement to non-NYITCOM faculty may be made for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses for travel, lodging, and meals on receipt of itemized receipts, consistent with institutional policy, e.g., coach air travel as defined by the New York Tech Travel and Entertainment Policy
