Our traditional commencement scheduled on Sunday, May 17, will most likely be canceled. In the likely event this should happen, please know we are studying ways to provide an alternative virtual graduation ceremony or will hold the ceremony at a later date to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2020.

Enter the student speaker contest

We are looking for an outstanding student speaker who can best represent the New York Tech student experience. This is a great honor and an opportunity to share your story.

Candidates must:

  • Be receiving an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree in August 2019, December 2019, or May 2020.
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 (undergraduate) or 3.5 (graduate or professional).
  • Demonstrate a commitment to campus involvement with a verifiable list of extracurricular and volunteer activities, club memberships, and leadership positions.
  • Deliver a two-minute sample speech to the selection committee that will be judged on:
    • Content (unique perspective, motivational aspects, relevant quotations, and anecdotes)
    • Presentation style and speech delivery

The Student Speaker receives:

  • Invitation to the commencement VIP breakfast for yourself and two guests
  • Four tickets to the VIP seating section (in addition to four general seating tickets) for the main ceremony
  • VIP parking at NYIT-Long Island campus on commencement day
  • Platform party processional and seating
  • Recognition in commencement program

Process and Deadlines:

Phase I: Application
Due Friday, March 20 by 5 p.m.

  • Completed application which includes: current resume, typed responses to questions, and a video recording of yourself reading your responses and/or telling your story in your own words

Phase II: Interviews
March – April 2020

  • Your application will be reviewed by the selection committee.
  • All semifinalists will be contacted and interviewed.
  • A winner will be selected.

Phase III: Practice Sessions
April – May 2020

  • Selected student will with a presentation coach to prepare and finalize their commencement speech, which will be approximately two minutes long.

Enter the national anthem singer contest

Interested in singing the National Anthem at commencement?

Please email commencement@nyit.edu with your name and contact information. The Office of Strategic Communications & External Affairs will contact you to schedule an audition. Auditions will be held in March.

The Student Singer receives:

  • Invitation to the commencement VIP breakfast for yourself and two guests
  • Four tickets to the VIP seating section (in addition to four general seating tickets) for the main ceremony
  • VIP parking at NYIT-Long Island campus on commencement day
  • Platform party processional and seating
  • Recognition in commencement program

Academic Regalia (Caps and Gowns)

All participating graduates must wear academic regalia (cap and gown). Information about ordering regalia will be posted towards the end of February.

Caps and gowns for all students will be distributed at the bookstores in NYIT-Long Island and NYIT-New York City starting on Monday, May 4.

  • May 4 – May 17: Bookstore hours
  • Commencement morning: The bookstore will distribute regalia outside on the tennis courts near the main tent.

Share Your Photos

Seniors, share your photos for our commencement day montage! All images should be 1600x1200 pixels (2MP) or higher, and have a file size of less than 10mb. Email photos to comm2020@nyit.edu.


Ordering Tickets

Each eligible candidate for graduation will be able to order commencement tickets online. If you did not file with the Office of the Registrar, you cannot reserve tickets. Please see Filing for Graduation for further details.

Admission to commencement is by ticket only. A ticket grants access to the commencement ceremony and individual school events. Due to limited seating, each student receives a maximum of four guest tickets. All guests, including children, require a ticket. The graduating student does not require a ticket. Additional tickets are not available.

Seating in the main tent is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once seating in the main tent is filled, ticketed guests will be directed to an overflow tent for viewing.

All students who plan to attend commencement must order and reserve tickets online.

If you would like to order a senior portrait, you can have it taken when you pick up your commencement tickets. The photographer will provide you with regalia (cap and gown) for the photo. You can also have a photo taken in your regular wardrobe.

Commencement Day and After

Schedule of Events

8 a.m.

Parking lots open and shuttle service begins.

8:30 a.m.

Main tent opens for guest seating. Graduates line up in President’s Stadium.

9 a.m.

Students processional begins & Webcast begins at nyit.edu/commencement.

11:15 a.m.

Commencement ceremony ends.* Graduates and guests proceed to individual school ceremonies taking place in tents near the main tent.

11:30 a.m.

School ceremonies begin.

1:30 p.m.

School ceremonies end.

*Ending of main ceremony will be around 11:15 a.m. Time subject to change day of. School ceremonies will immediately follow the end of main ceremony.


Directions, Parking, and Shuttle service

Directions to NYIT-Long Island (Old Westbury) Campus

  • Traffic
    On-campus parking is expected to be limited on commencement day, and normal traffic patterns do not apply! Upon arrival, please follow the directions of the police and parking staff.

  • Parking
    On-campus parking will be closed shortly after the commencement ceremony begins. Guests who arrive after campus parking lots are filled will be re-directed to the adjacent LIU Post campus on Northern Boulevard, just east of New York Tech, and transported via shuttle bus to the main tent. Please allow yourself extra time for delays and parking.

  • Shuttle Service on Campus
    Shuttle service on campus, as well as from the LlU Post campus parking lot, will be available. Staff will direct graduates and guests to pick-up/drop-off locations. Some parking fields are within walking distance of the tents.

  • Manhasset LIRR Train Station
    Complimentary round-trip shuttle service will be available to and from the Manhasset LIRR train station. Trains arriving at the Manhasset station from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. will be met by a shuttle bus to campus. Anyone arriving after 10:30 a.m. will need to arrange for cab service. Shuttle buses will leave for the Manhasset LIRR station from noon to 2:30 p.m.

  • NYIT-New York City Round-Trip Shuttle
    Complimentary round-trip shuttle service will be available from the New York City campus on a first-come, first-served basis. Graduates are allowed to reserve a total of five seats. Space is limited. Reservations are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The shuttles will depart in front of 16 W. 61st St., between Columbus and Broadway at 7 a.m. Please note: The last bus to leave from the Old Westbury campus to Manhattan after commencement will depart at 3 p.m. There may be wait times of one hour between bus departures.

    NOTE: Round-Trip Shuttle form will be available next month.


Disability and special assistance

New York Tech is pleased to provide assistance to guests with special needs. Commencement staff is available to direct and assist people with disabilities. Restroom facilities are located near the tents.

Shuttle service with wheelchair access is available. Please drop off any guest requiring special assistance at the bus stop in each lot and then park your car. Upon arrival to the main tent, proceed to the Disability and Special Assistance tent where ushers will assist via golf carts. Only the person with the disability is able to ride in the cart; other guests are asked to walk. Please note, there is a limited amount of golf carts, and we will try to assist everyone as efficiently as possible.

Please plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m. in order to ensure timely assistance.

  • If you are a student who has special assistance needs, please contact commencement@nyit.edu.
  • If help is needed for hearing or visual impairment, notify us by April 30 at 516.686.1177 or commencement@nyit.edu.
  • Due to high demand, guests will experience delays in shuttle service immediately before and after the ceremonies.
  • Guests who arrive after the campus parking lots are filled will be re-directed to LIU Post campus on Northern Boulevard just east of New York Tech, and transported via shuttle bus to the main tent.

Photos During the Event

Island Photography will be taking photos of our graduates during:

  • Graduate line-up beginning at 8:30 a.m.
  • Processional into main commencement ceremony.
  • Individual school graduation ceremonies on the stage as they receive their diploma folder.

College of Osteopathic Medicine Hooding Ceremony

NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Hooding Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 2020 at LIU Tilles Center of Performing Arts, from 5 p.m. to approximately 7 p.m. Student arrival time is 4 p.m.

Tickets
Each graduate will receive 5 guest tickets. A ticket must be presented by each guest to gain admittance to the ceremony. The graduate does not require a ticket. Guest hooders require a ticket.

General Seating
Doors will open to guests at approximately 4:15 p.m. Ushers will seat ticket-holding guests on first-come, first-served basis. Guests are not permitted backstage, on stage, or to stand in the aisles at any time/for any reason during the processional and ceremony.

Handicap Seating
Handicapped seating will be available.
