FAQs for International Students
To confirm your enrollment, log in to your Admissions Portal and submit the enrollment deposit. This secures your spot in the incoming class. Once you’ve done that, you’ll receive instructions on setting up your student email, registering for classes, and preparing for your arrival.
All of your next steps are available in your Admissions Portal, including paying the enrollment deposit and submitting the required financial documents for your Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (Form I-20). This form is required to apply for an F-1 visa to study in the United States.
You’ll also find information about housing, class registration, campus resources, and any additional document requests in your Admissions Portal. Be sure to check it regularly for important updates.
If you need to defer your admission, submit a deferral request to the international admissions office. You may be required to provide a reason to defer your I-20 (if applicable). Deferrals are usually allowed for up to one academic year, but please check with the international admissions team for specific policies.
To apply for your I-20, submit your financial documents and passport copy through your Admissions Portal. Graduate students must also pay the enrollment deposit before the I-20 process begins. Once your documents are approved, the I-20 is typically issued within 7 to 10 business days and is sent electronically along with your visa appointment.
You must provide a bank statement and a financial affidavit of support showing sufficient funds to cover one academic year of tuition and living expenses. Specific amounts and requirements are listed on our International Students Admissions page.
Yes! If you’re currently studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa, you can transfer your SEVIS record to New York Tech. To request a transfer from your current school, provide our New York Tech transfer release form, SEVIS school code, and acceptance letter to your current school so that they can process the transfer to New York Tech. This process must be completed before your program start date.
If your visa is delayed, contact the embassy for updates and notify our international admissions team. We do not issue late arrival letters. If you cannot enter the United States before the semester starts, you must defer your admission.
Your visa would be denied for only 2 reasons:
214(b) – Direct denial
- Most common type of refusal.
- The visa officer does not have the confidence to approve your case.
The reasons will never be explained to you.
221(g) – Administrative processing
- Consular officer needs to consider the application further.
- This is mandatory in some cases due to the nature of a given program of study.
- This sometimes just means that the consular officer has doubts.
- Students should try to avoid this as much as possible as this can be a precursor to a denial.
- This type of processing cannot be expedited in any way and students will have to wait for a response.
If denied, review the reasons provided by the embassy and consult our International Education Office for guidance.

In addition, make sure to contact the international admissions office to have your I-20 updated. The change of major would also require you to provide updated financial documentation.
If you’ve completed college-level courses, submit your official transcripts for a transfer credit evaluation. Our academic team will assess which credits apply to your program.
