General Education at New York Tech

Effective as of Fall 2023, New York Tech has implemented a redesigned general education curriculum (Gen. Ed.). This curriculum is flexible, aligned to the mission, vision, and educational goals of New York Tech, and is relevant and responsive to students’ lives and evolving career trajectories.

The Gen. Ed. curriculum has four core components:

  • Four Foundation Courses
  • Four Interdisciplinary Seminars in at least three different areas
  • One Mathematics and Two Science Courses
  • Speech Intensive and Experiential Education Courses

All students enrolling at New York Tech as of Fall 2023 or later must fulfill the revised Gen. Ed. requirements.

Transfer, AP, or CLEP credits as well as International Baccalaureate (IB) and DSST proficiency exams may be used to fulfill Gen. Ed. requirements.

Outcomes & Assessment

General Education is critical to the undergraduate experience. It provides students with essential transferable skills, improves their employability, supports retention, and contributes to a strong first-year experience. Most importantly, it transforms our students into responsible and ethical citizens. To that end, New York Tech’s Gen. Ed. curriculum prepares students for mastery in eight Learning Outcomes (LOs).

  1. Demonstrate critical and creative thinking.
  2. Apply quantitative, qualitative, and scientific analysis to identify, explain, and solve complex problems.
  3. Develop technological competency to analyze and/or solve problems.
  4. Identify, evaluate, use, and communicate information clearly, effectively, and responsibly.
  5. Distinguish among opinions, facts, and inferences and develop well-supported arguments that convey diverse viewpoints.
  6. Apply ethical and moral frameworks to situations—personal, professional, and/or societal—and explain how people may be impacted depending on their identities and circumstances.
  7. Apply multidisciplinary ways of thinking to analyze and/or solve problems, taking into account the impact of socio-cultural, historical, political, and/or economic forces on diverse populations.
  8. Collaborate effectively in teams.

The Speech Intensive and Experiential Education courses have additional learning outcomes.

The Gen. Ed. curriculum scaffolds learning outcomes across different courses. Proficiency in these skills is evaluated through a rigorous assessment process.

The Gen. Ed. assessment process involves the assessment of Learning Outcomes (LOs) in the Gen. Ed. curriculum. Assessment provides opportunities for departments to update course syllabi and assignments, encourage faculty development, and promote consistency across sections. It is important to ensure that our Gen. Ed. curriculum supports student learning and success by:

  • Helping to determine future priorities and enable planning for, and responses to, future challenges and opportunities.
  • Supporting the continuous cycle of data-informed reflection, analysis, and program improvement.
  • Meeting and maintaining compliance with MSCHE accreditation standards.
