Social Media Accessibility
Inclusive Content Across All Platforms
At New York Tech, we are committed to creating an inclusive digital experience for all members of our community. In alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act and evolving federal accessibility standards, we strive to ensure that our digital content is accessible to individuals of all abilities.
Digital accessibility ensures that everyone—including individuals with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive disabilities—can engage with and benefit from our content. Accessible content improves usability for all users and reflects our commitment to equity and inclusion.
Accessibility Guidelines
Our digital content aims to align with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Level AA standards, which are widely recognized as the benchmark for accessibility.
- Provide descriptive alt text for all images.
- Be concise but meaningful—describe the content and purpose of the image.
- Avoid phrases like “image of” or “picture of.”
Example:
- Yes: “Students collaborating in a robotics lab on campus.”
- No: “Image of students”
- Include accurate captions for all videos.
- Ensure captions are synchronized and include relevant sounds (e.g., [applause], [laughter]).
- Avoid auto-captioning without review.
- Clear, minimal text can be included in graphics. Include key points and additional information in the caption.
- Ensure text is large, high-contrast, and readable on mobile devices.
Example: If using an event graphic with details, add the date and location into the caption.
- Capitalize the first letter of each word in hashtags to improve readability.
Example:
- Yes: #FutureEngineers
- No: #futureengineers
- Use emojis sparingly and place them at the end of sentences.
- Screen readers read emojis aloud, which can disrupt the flow.
- Use plain language whenever possible.
- Avoid jargon, abbreviations, or explain them when necessary.
- Do not use content that flashes more than three times per second.
- Limit overly busy or fast-moving visuals.
