Continuous Program Improvement (CPI)

New York Tech implemented Continuous Program Improvement (CPI) in 2020 across all academic departments and student support units to improve educational effectiveness.

CPI applies Deming’s Model for Continuous Improvement to our practice of learning outcome assessment and improving student success endeavors. CPI is a data-informed decision-making process that aims to improve student learning and student success, with a focus on taking action and measuring its effectiveness.

The purpose of CPI is to advance New York Tech’s strategic priority of optimizing student success, supporting the achievement of Institutional Learning Goals, and ensuring compliance with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Standard V, Educational Effectiveness Assessment. CPI is implemented collaboratively by academic departments and student support offices across the institution.

New York Tech Learning Goals (Updated 2025)

By the time of graduation, New York Tech students will, at the appropriate level (bachelors, masters, or professional):

  • Gain a coherent understanding of the knowledge, skills, and values of their discipline.
  • Achieve proficiency in oral and written communications, scientific and quantitative reasoning, critical analysis, technological competency, and information literacy.
  • Integrate academic and co-curricular learning to explore concepts and questions that bridge disciplines, professions, and cultures.
  • Formulate evidence-based and ethical courses of action or conclusions to address challenges and problems.
  • Engage with, respond to, and reflect on political, social, environmental, and economic challenges at local, national, and global levels.
  • Develop self-efficacy, professionalism, creativity, and an innovative spirit.

CPI at New York Tech

The CPI Committee of the Academic Senate is the institutional unit that brings together all assessment and improvement activities at the university—for programs with or without professional accreditation, and for academic departments and student support offices. The committee members come from all academic schools and numerous support departments.

CPI Committee Mission

  • Ensure the CPI process and policies meet the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Standard V, Educational Effectiveness Assessment. 
  • Ensure that CPI is used to advance New York Tech’s mission.
  • Raise the visibility of CPI for educational effectiveness assessment within the university.
  • Maintain a common, unified, mission-driven process.
  • Develop guidelines, templates, and resources, and provide feedback on CPI plans and reports.
  • Ensure that CPI initiatives receive financial support based on the committee’s evaluation.
  • Periodically evaluate (CPI) process and make recommendations for improvements.
