Robert Koenig, associate professor of hospitality studies and associate dean of the School of Management, offers his expertise in a Washington Post story about what people take away from their hotel rooms. Koenig tells the Post, “Many hotels experience guests taking an unusually high amount of [toiletry] items throughout their stay, reasoning that they paid for these items in the cost of the room.” When this happens, he says, hotels’ operating costs increase.

A hotel room’s “branded glassware, TV remote controls, pillows, hair dryers, clock radios, VCRs and plants” are clearly not supposed to be taken away by guests, notes Koenig. When these items disappear, the guest will usually be charged.

 

NYITCOM at A-State White Coat Ceremony Featured in Jonesboro Media

McNally, an expert on employee citizenship and civic engagement, urges a broad perspective rather than hasty judgment for offensive statements.

“People should be held accountable for what they've posted when it reflects who they are,” she says in the article, which also appeared at Yahoo News. “However, for many people, these posts represent momentary lapses in judgment that remain forever on the internet. This is especially true for people that were posting while in their tweens and teens, when they didn't necessarily know who they were and what they stood for.”

 

Fairbairn Advises on Credit Cards for Foreign Travel

Fairbairn, an associate professor of hospitality management, reminds readers to choose a credit card accepted in the countries where they will be traveling. In addition, he warns of foreign transaction fees and fluctuations in exchange rates. “You also need to put a good deal of charges on your card to maintain preferential treatment,” he says.

AARP Quotes Yao on Chronic Pain

Sheldon Yao, D.O., chair and associate professor, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, NYITCOM, was featured in an AARP article regarding chronic pain in older adults. A Harris Poll of 2,000 adults commissioned by the American Osteopathic Association found that half of survey participants ages 65 and older have experienced protracted chronic pain, with back pain being the most common complaint. Supporting the use of non-pharmaceutical therapies and treatments, Yao optimistically states:

“There are always aches and pains that come with aging. But we can help find ways to cope so they can continue to do what they love to do.”

 

Anid’s Prominent Promotion Featured in The Island Now

The appointment of Nada Anid, Ph.D., to the newly minted position of Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Affairs was featured in The Island Now. In the feature, Anid discusses success in her former role as NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences’ first female dean, as well as her vision for the future.

“My job will be to realize our new president’s vision and to make NYIT better known as the place for makers, for doers, for inventors and innovators, and to make NYIT a premiere polytechnic both on Long Island and in New York,” Anid said. “That will be the main message we’re going to push forward.”
