Amanda Golden
College of Arts & Sciences / HumanitiesAmanda Golden, Ph.D., associate professor of English in the Department of Humanities, spoke at “How She Sang: Celebrating the Life and Work of Poet Anne Sexton, 1928-1974," held at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., on October 30, 2024.
Claude Gagna
CASClaude E. Gagna, Ph.D., professor of biological and chemical sciences, wrote a letter to the editor of the American Chemical Society's Chemical & Engineering News. The letter, "Reactions: Attrition in science and noncanonical structures for DNA-based computers," was published on October 27, 2024. Gagna responded to an important article written on how double-stranded DNA could replace silicon chips in the future; he suggested that researchers need to think beyond the canonical, traditional Watson-Crick right-handed double-stranded B-DNA, to take advantage of other DNA structures.
\nEvan Shieh
School of Architecture & DesignEvan Shieh, M.AUD., assistant professor of architecture, published his book Autonomous Urbanism: Towards a New Transitopia with the publisher Applied Research + Design (AR+D), an imprint of ORO Editions. A culmination of several years of research, the 480-page, two-volume, research and design monograph explores the latent and transformative impact autonomous vehicles will have on cities' urban and spatial future. The book was launched as a public lecture at the School of Architecture and Design on October 23, 2024, as part of its 2024 Fall Lecture + Events series "Worlds Un/Designed".
Claude Gagna
CASClaude E. Gagna, Ph.D., professor of biological and chemical sciences, published a peer-reviewed journal article, Editors and Journals: Part III- "Sto Tavo (Who is in Charge)?" on October 22, 2024. The article addresses various issues related to publishing peer-reviewed journal articles by academics, researchers, editors, and journals.
Evan Shieh
School of Architecture & DesignEvan Shieh, M.AUD., assistant professor of architecture, received the 2024 Stretto Alumni Achievement Award at the inaugural gala of the Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra, held at the Watershed Institute on October 19, 2024. A 2003–2007 alumnus, Shieh was a violin concertmaster, soloist, and assistant conductor with Stretto. The award recognizes alumni for embodying the organization's mission in their achievements and sharing those values with others in the community.
Evan Shieh
School of Architecture & DesignEvan Shieh, M.AUD., assistant professor of architecture, and Farzana Gandhi, M.Arch., associate professor of architecture, gave a joint lecture at the 2024 New York City Architecture Biennale, which was held across a three-day event, October 17 – 19, 2024. Shieh and Gandhi spoke on Day 3 of the Biennale around the theme of "Technology," speaking on the role of technology in their recent research and practice, and the common ground and values that overlap between their work in different topical contexts.
Wenyao Hu
School of ManagementWenyao Hu, Ph.D., CFA, , assistant professor of accounting and finance at the School of Management, presented "The Power of Language: Does Vocabulary Richness Provide Value to Investors?" at the "Financial Management Association International" (FMA) Annual Meeting held in Grapevine, Texas, October 16 – 19, 2024. Hu introduced a new linguistic feature into the business context—vocabulary richness—which measures the range of vocabulary used by executives during earnings conference calls. His findings suggest that high vocabulary richness significantly enhances the initial market reaction by helping market participants better understand the conveyed information.
Wenyao Hu
School of ManagementWenyao Hu, Ph.D., CFA, assistant professor of accounting and finance at the School of Management, authored an article titled "How Artificial Intelligence Incidents Affect Banks and Financial Services Firms? A Study of Five Firms," published October 18, 2024, in Finance Research Letters, an ABDC A-level journal. This study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) incidents on the banking and financial industries and finds that firms with AI incidents face higher bankruptcy risks and lower operational cash flows.

School of Architecture and Design, Department of Architecture.Dongsei Kim, M.Des., associate professor of architecture, was invited to present his paper, “Architecture at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ): Speculative Architectural Methods as Imagining New Cosmopolitan Polities,” at (Un)Defining Korean Architecture: Modernity, Stories, and Transformation , the third annual Korean Studies Symposium at the University at Buffalo, on October 18, 2024.
