About Physician Assistant Studies

What is a Physician Assistant?

A physician assistant (or PA) is a nationally certified and state-licensed medical professional. They practice and prescribe medication in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories, with the exception of Puerto Rico. Physician assistants work in a variety of healthcare settings, from private clinics to major hospitals, with physicians and other providers on healthcare teams. Besides primary care, a major focus of the profession, they also specialize in areas such as emergency and internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, dermatology, and many other fields. These well-paid, in-demand practitioners serve as valuable members of an integrated, multidisciplinary medical team.

Our Mission

The mission of New York Institute of Technology’s Physician Assistant Program is to provide students with a holistic, learner-centered medical education, graduating compassionate healthcare professionals prepared to practice culturally sensitive medicine and committed to advocacy in their careers and communities.

New York Tech PA Goals

  • Goal I: Demonstrate comprehensive medical knowledge necessary to provide safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care.
  • Goal II: Provide culturally sensitive, inclusive healthcare by recognizing the diverse backgrounds, beliefs, values, and social determinants of health that shape each patient’s experience.
  • Goal III: Communicate effectively with patients, caregivers, and interprofessional healthcare teams.
  • Goal IV: Advocate for patients, the PA profession, and health policy initiatives that advance quality, equity, and access to care.

Patient-centered Approach

A patient-centered approach means caring for people holistically while respecting their personal beliefs, experiences, and values. This is essential when treating patients in today’s world, which is more globally and culturally diverse than ever. Here, you’ll adopt a holistic attitude learning in our classrooms, working in our high-tech labs, and applying this in clinical clerkships available in a wide variety of settings. Upon graduation, you’ll be able to treat patients from a wide spectrum of clinical populations and practice settings.
