Early Assurance Program

Exercise Science, B.S. / Physical Therapy, D.P.T.

Start your Exercise Science, B.S. degree as a freshman at New York Tech, and you may qualify for early assurance of acceptance in our Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) program.

Through a special partnership between New York Tech’s Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences and the Department of Physical Therapy, up to four Exercise Science majors each year can secure their spot in the D.P.T. program after completing their sophomore year. a seamless path from undergraduate study to your professional doctorate and a rewarding career helping others move, heal, and thrive.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this early assurance program, you must have completed the first two years of undergraduate study in the New York Tech Exercise Science, B.S. program and have met the following criteria:

  • An overall grade point average of 3.2 at NYIT New York Tech.
  • No science or math grades below a grade of B-.
  • No grade of D or F in any course.
  • At least 200 hours of volunteer/paid experience under the direct supervision of a physical therapist.
  • A favorable recommendation by the Exercise Science faculty at New York Tech.
  • Obtain a favorable recommendation from the New York Tech DPT program faculty after a personal interview.

In addition, to continue enrollment in the program and be accepted to the professional phase of the New York Tech D.P.T. program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Maintain the overall and science grade point average of 3.2.
  • Maintain all science and math grades at a B- or better.
  • Only one course can be retaken one time to achieve the required minimum grade.
  • Complete 100 hours of volunteer/paid experience with physical therapy supervision each academic year, so the students enter the professional phase with 400 hours.
  • Graduate from New York Tech’s Exercise Science, B.S. program in four years.
  • Complete as electives all D.P.T. requirements that are not part of their Exercise Science major.
  • Formally apply to the program through PTCAS (centralized application service).
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check.

Any accepted student will be dual advised by faculty and staff from both the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences (Exercise Science) and the Department of Physical Therapy.
