Central Islip, NY – NYIT will help bring museums from across the nation into elementary school classrooms with the help of a Federal grant for technology-based partnerships.

"Students can now ‘visit' museums around the country without even leaving their desks by tapping into the existing internet connections in their classrooms," said Stan Silverman, director of NYIT's Technology Based Learning Systems (TBLS).

NYIT's grant award of $229,625 was one of only ten awards nationwide from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Silverman's group will work with the Albany Institute of History and Art on a four-day professional development workshop for teachers and museum educators. The grant will help them create special interactive, multi-media presentations, develop technology-based lessons and use new technologies to bring museum collections, galleries, and archives directly into classrooms.

As part of the professional development workshop, scheduled for August 2012, selected teachers and museum educators will visit the Fire Island Lighthouse to develop the first model lessons in the project.
