After moving up an unprecedented 130 points in The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education (WSJ/THE) rankings last year, New York Institute of Technology continued its sustained positive momentum and jumped another two spots. Moving from No. 266, New York Tech is now No. 264 nationally, as reported in the September 18 edition of The Wall Street Journal and online. Among the 797 universities in the 2021 rankings, New York Tech tied with Bard College, Duquesne, Iowa State, and Louisiana State. The report also placed it at No. 33 out of 79 universities in New York State and No. 101 out of 258 universities in the Northeast.

New York Tech was ranked as one of the most diverse campuses nationwide, placing it at No. 8 among the Top Schools for Environment, a pillar that measures inclusion, diversity, and international student representation.

The university’s 2021 rankings in the Resources pillar demonstrated ongoing strengths in financial resources per student and faculty per student. In the Outcomes pillar, salaries of New York Tech graduates continued to rank well vs. competitors.

“Our laser focus on the student experience, in prioritizing our resources in support of our students, is clearly reflected in the 2021 WSJ/THE rankings,” said President Henry C. “Hank” Foley, Ph.D.

The rankings are based on a study The Wall Street Journal conducts with Times Higher Education, with scoring based on 15 key indicators that assess colleges in four areas: Outcomes, Resources, Engagement, and Environment.

Because of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education was unable to administer the student engagement survey for this year’s rankings, and instead utilized student survey data from the 2020 rankings.

The 2021 rankings will also be posted on the Times Higher Education website on October 7. Nearby schools that ranked nationally below New York Tech include Manhattan College at 276, Pace University at 285, Iona, LIU, and St Johns at 401-500, and those ahead of New York Tech include Hofstra, Adelphi, and Molloy at 220, 227, and 229, respectively.

Additional Rankings Strength

The positive sustained momentum that New York Tech achieved in the WSJ/THE 2021 rankings builds on the strength the university realized in the U.S. News & World Report 2021 rankings.

Earlier this week, New York Tech announced that for the tenth consecutive year, it ranks among the top 50 universities in the North in the U.S. News & World Report 2021 rankings, moving up eight spots to No. 34 in the regional rankings (following a similar 8-spot jump in the 2020 rankings). In addition to criteria that distinguish the institution from its peers (low student-to-faculty ratio, small class sizes, value, and diversity), the university’s surge this year is attributed to significant improvements in both freshmen retention and graduation rates. Trend data for recent years show the incline in the graduation rate of our students, particularly those who are Pell-eligible, coupled with a sustained increase in the financial resources per student provided by New York Tech.

“I’ve frequently stated that rankings in and of themselves are not a goal or objective, but they do show that our laser focus on the student experience—including strategic initiatives to enhance teaching and learning, curriculum linkage to career outcomes and experiential opportunities, and enhancements to engagement, advisement, student services, and teaching innovation—has had a direct impact on retention and degree completion,” Foley added.
