Old Westbury, NY – NYIT has received preliminary notification that it is one of 30 recipients of an $8.2 million federal grant that focuses on motivating New York's at-risk youth to prepare for and graduate from college. College Access Challenge Grants (CACG) assist students and their families with activities such as promoting financial literacy and debt management, career planning, and filling out financial forms.

NYIT will receive almost $50,000, which will be used over a two-year period to design, implement, and evaluate effective and exemplary pre-college and career guidance and counseling practices for more than 3,400 students attending John Adams High School, which is located in a low-income, urban community in Queens, N.Y. NYIT's grant application was facilitated by the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research and the School of Education.

The awards were announced by New York State Governor David A. Paterson on Feb. 12. Thirty creative, innovative programs submitted by local schools, agencies, and community-based organizations from throughout the state have been selected to receive CACG monies to help prepare youth for success at the post-secondary level. Other recipients include Rochester Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, and St. John's University.
