New York, NY – New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum announced a new partnership to incorporate project-based learning for NYIT's undergraduate students with the reconstruction of an aircraft restoration tent on the deck of the U.S.S. Intrepid through a design competition.

As part of the Intrepid Aircraft Restoration Pavilion Competition, NYIT students will create interdisciplinary teams to develop a state-of-the-art "green" energy hangar. The objective of the competition is for students to redesign the hangar as a standalone, permanent, enclosed structure to store aircraft on the deck of the Intrepid. Students must adhere to a $1 million budget and are charged with using sustainable, renewable (i.e., wind, solar, etc.) energy technologies to showcase the hangar, while simultaneously meeting the needs of the museum. All students at NYIT's New York campuses are invited to participate in the competition. Teams will consist of a minimum of three students, including at least one architecture student and one engineering student.

"The Intrepid project is an exciting opportunity for our students to work with a world-class institution at a very special and unique location."

"Partnerships like the one we're forging with the Intrepid Museum are an opportunity to enrich our students' classroom experience and theoretical knowledge with real-world problems," said Nada Anid, Ph.D., dean of NYIT's School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. "Students will have a chance to work with their teammates toward specific design goals, while incorporating input from engineers and experts from the Intrepid Museum."

The winning team will be chosen by representatives from the Intrepid Museum at the end of the fall semester in December. The team that creates the winning design will win $3,000; second place will receive $2,400; and third place will receive $1,500. The winning design will serve as the basis of the reconstruction of the hangar and also guide the curriculum of senior-level design classes for students in engineering and computing sciences and architecture and design. Student awards are underwritten by Ted Moudis Associates Architecture and Design.

The newly renovated Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum complex includes the 900-foot-long aircraft carrier ‘Intrepid' with seven full decks and four theme halls; the guided missile submarine Growler; and an extensive collection of over 30 aircraft including the A-12 Blackbird, the fastest plane in the world, and the British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft in the world. Also new to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is the 12,240 square-foot interactive Exploreum—which contains 18 different hands-on exhibits—that teaches guests about the different properties of the sea, air, space and living at sea as each relates to the ship Intrepid. In the Exploreum, guests can experience a flight simulator, climb a cargo net, transmit messages using Morse code, crawl through living quarters of crewmembers, learn how the Intrepid turned salt water into fresh water and perform various tasks while wearing space gloves.
