Training Programs: Registered Nurse Refresher

This course will provide registered nurses who have been absent from the acute care setting for at least one year with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reenter clinical practice. The course is taught in person on our Long Island campus, with 48 hours of didactic instruction and 14 hours (two days) of on-site skills instruction over two Saturdays.

Upon finishing this 62-hour course, students receive a certificate of completion from New York Institute of Technology. In-person classes will be held on New York Tech's Long Island campus. This FREE training is valued at $1,900.

Individuals need to have and provide upon registratering for course, a Registered Nurse Certificate license and certificate number.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Apply nursing knowledge to the planning, assessment, and evaluation of safe nursing care in an acute care setting.
  • Competently perform skills needed by the RN in an acute care setting.
  • Confidently provide care to a variety of clients in the acute care setting.

Skills covered:

  • Vital signs
  • Medication administration
  • IVs – primary, secondary, and pumps
  • Injections – SQ, IM, and Z track
  • Enteral feedings and equipment
  • Skills involving sterile technique
  • Standard and disease-based precautions

This program is part of the New York Tech Healthcare Service Training Project, offering qualified individuals tuition-free training in response to the healthcare needs of the Long Island region. It is supported by a grant from the New York State Department of Labor and the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council (LIREDC).
