We offer three levels of programs, for both undergraduate and graduate students, based on English proficiency.

Undergraduate students will be required to complete Level 4 (High-Intermediate Academic English) before advancing to the five-credit WRIT 110, Basic Writing and Reading for International Students, and the three-credit FCSP 105 contextualized for undergraduate international students courses. These courses will give you the English reading, writing, and speaking skills you’ll need to thrive in university-level coursework.

Graduate students completing the Pathway program will be required to pass Advanced Academic English Level 5 while taking credit-bearing courses in their majors.

Point of entry into credit-bearing coursework will be defined by the admitting academic program. They will determine whether you can enter credit-bearing courses at Level 3, 4, or 5 and prescribe a series of Pathway Program-eligible courses at either the undergraduate or graduate level. You will be required to take a minimum of one academic credit counting towards your academic program during the Pathway Program.

We will place you into the appropriate level based on your scores on the Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT) and a writing diagnostic test. The chart below should provide some guidance regarding potential placement based on your previous scores on other English proficiency exams. English Language Institute advisors will review all proficiency scores available to make a final determination about appropriate placement.
