We are a residential, college-based postsecondary transition program located in Old Westbury, N.Y., for young adults with learning differences and Autism spectrum diagnoses. “Currently, I work at Modell’s Sporting Goods™ and at Bagel Boss™. At VIP, my internship at Modell’s easily transferred to a store in my hometown. VIP helped me be a better employee, teaching me how to be on time and giving me skills I need for a job and social skills I need to use on the job. It also taught me to problem-solve so I can stay employed. The independent living skills were invaluable. I loved learning the travel training skills. I am waiting patiently to find a home, and I am 100% looking forward to living on my own.” – Adam, Class of 2013
VIP’s three-year curriculum emphasizes social, executive functioning, and independent living skills that young adults need for independence and success.
- Employment Training: Students are placed in community-based internships with support from job coaches, and they participate in employment classes within the VIP curriculum.
- Pre-Degree Option: Students choose to take one to three credit-bearing courses per semester at NYIT, offered in conjunction with the VIP curriculum of individualized academic and counseling support.
Qualified students can earn an Associate’s Degree in Communication Arts or Business Administration in three years while receiving specialized support in academics and the traditional social and independent living support offered by VIP.
“I liked working in the cafeteria, making friends, and interacting with others. I have been married for 10 years and travel with my wife, Rebecca, all over the world with VIP. I work in the dining hall of a senior citizens center in New Jersey.” – Eric, VIP class of 1997
I-to-I is a five-week residential summer experience that includes all the skill-building and experiential learning associated with VIP. It is offered to students 17 and older who are either interested in VIP academic year programming or are in-between years at VIP. Students enjoy social/recreational opportunities, participate in the VIP curriculum, and are fully integrated in NYIT campus/residential life.
