Old Westbury, NY – Students from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) won prestigious awards at the American Academy of Osteopathy's (AAO) annual conference (Convocation 2010 Pelvis and Sacrum: Where it all comes together) in Colorado Springs, Colo., on March 17–21, 2010.

Jordan Werley, a fourth-year NYCOM student and an academic fellow, won the national A. Hollis Wolf (AHW) Case Competition for her case, "Atypical Neck Pain in a Patient after Surgery." Along with her competitors, Werley was judged on the ability to demonstrate an understanding of osteopathic principles and the application of patient diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Judges seek students with impressive overall clinical knowledge displayed through a discussion about how osteopathic care was significant to the patient outcome. In the presentation, students must also explain their decision-making process throughout treatment and delivery. As the winner of the AHW Case Competition, Werley will be traveling to Paris in October 2010 on an educational tour.

Additionally, two NYCOM posters emerged as winners in the AAO's ninth annual Scientific Poster Session. Vivian Siu, a third-year NYCOM student, won first prize for her case presentation poster, "Combined elbow and shoulder pain responding to Rib OMT in a patient with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura." Danielle Turrin and Tim Hegeman, also NYCOM students, won second prize for their poster, "The role of osteopathic manipulation on Vestibular Neuritis."

"Our students worked very hard to be a part of these competitions, and their prestigious awards are proof of their continuous determination," said Dr. Reem Abu-Sbaih, a NYCOM physician mentor for the AAO conference and assistant professor in the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). "Students at NYCOM have won first and second prizes at the AHW Case Competition over the past four years, and I am very proud that they have continued this tradition."
