Long Island Press Spotlights Students’ Life-Saving Efforts
A Long Island Press article details how three students from the College of Osteopathic Medicine(NYITCOM) and one from the School of Health Professions, along with Matthew Heller, D.O., provided lifesaving medical care at The Beat Down 15, a mixed martial arts (MMA) and kickboxing event.
Michael Akhavan, a fourth-year medical student, said he and a team of students immediately jumped into action to save the fighter’s life.
Akhavan was part of a student medical team that accompanies Heller to sporting events to practice sports medicine.
Heller said his goal is to train the next generation of doctors and to give them meaningful, real-life experience that they can get involved in early as medical or physician assistant students.
