News Byte: Nursing Students Receive White Coats

On October 23, students in the New York Institute of Technology nursing program received their white coats. The Nursing White Coat Ceremony signifies the transition from classroom learning to clinical learning. It represents a formal welcome into the nursing profession. It is held each fall semester of the students’ junior year, before beginning their first clinical experience in health facilities.
Faculty, staff, family, and friends gathered at Riland Auditorium for the milestone event. Words of encouragement and congratulations were offered by Gordon Schmidt, Ph.D., dean of NYIT School of Health Professions, and Lisa Sparacino, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Nursing. New York Tech alumnus Nitant Shah, RN (B.S. ’18) gave the keynote address.
“Our annual White Coat Ceremony is an inspiring event,” said Sparacino. “We celebrate our nursing students’ entry into the practice phase of their education. Each year I am moved by the professionalism and caring attitude of our students.”
