Join Dr. Franca Trubiano, associate professor of Architecture and chair of the Ph.D. Program at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design. as she argues for a realignment of architecture with the content of treatises, essays, articles, and letters by those who have been, throughout history, committed to the art of building.

"Building at Risk, When Theory Abandons Building” considers how contemporary scholarship in architectural theory has steered away from the topic of building in its reluctance to admit that both design and construction are central to its concerns. It argues for a realignment of architecture with the content of treatises, essays, articles, and letters by those who have been, throughout history, committed to the art of building. In this, the subject of this presentation is Building Theories, a book that argues for the return of a practice of architectural theory set amongst building, buildings, and builders. Students, practitioners, and educators will identify in Building Theories ways of thinking that strive for the integration of representation with tectonics; reject the supposed primacy of the former over the latter; recognize how aesthetics is an insufficient scaffold for subtending the subject of architectural ethics; and accept, without reservation, that material transformations have always been at the origins of built form.

In times of global crises, education, collaboration, and dialogs can represent positive “game changing” factors.

Through dialogue with international universities, industries, and practicing designers, the NYIT School of Architecture and Design Lecture Series will nurture dialogue on the education of the creatives of the future and will challenge the more conventional university curricula, and the narratives and communication strategies of the current professional practice.

Dr. Franca Trubiano is a Registered Architect with l’Ordre des Architectes du Québec, associate p rofessor and chair of Ph.D. program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design. Her research is funded by the Mellon Humanities Urbanism and Design (H+U+D) Initiative, the Perry World House, the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at UPENN, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Her recent publications include Building Theories, Architecture as the Art of Building (Routledge 2022), the coedited Women [Re]Build; Stories, Polemics, Futures (ORO, ar+d, 2020), and the edited Design and Construction of High-Performance Homes: Building Envelopes, Renewable Energies and Integrated Practice (Routledge Press 2012), translated into Korean and awarded the 2015 Sejong Outstanding Scholarly Book Awards from the Korea Publication Industry Promotion Agency. Bio/Matter/Techno/Synthetics - Design Futures for the More than Human (ACTAR) is a coedited book on alternative design theories led by women in the field to be published in winter 2023.
