NYIT-Vancouver student Miranda Cabiladas sat down with her colleague from Campus Life, Valentina Lameda, to talk about living in Paris, pursuing an M.B.A., and her passion—photography.
Miranda Cabiladas is pursuing an M.B.A. at NYIT-Vancouver, but the degree wasn’t something she planned on until recently. Her educational journey began at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. After two years, she was offered a scholarship to attend Sorbonne University in Paris, and embarked on the new adventure with no hesitations.
In 2009, she received a B.A. in European studies, followed by a master’s in international relations in 2010. “I have always been fascinated and interested in politics. It is something I am still very interested in today,” Cabiladas said about her decision to get her master’s degree. She loved Paris so much that she stayed in the city for a decade, working for a research agency and as a high school English instructor. An avid photographer, Cabiladas also documented the City of Light through her camera lens. But Cabiladas had a tough time finding a job related to her politics background. She applied for positions in non-profit and international organizations, but nothing seemed like the right fit. That was when she decided to change her career path and applied to the M.B.A. program at NYIT-Vancouver.

“I don’t take still life pictures as much as I should, but when I do, I am reminded of how important it is to stop and breathe and not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life,” Cabiladas said.

“I picture myself as that statue…I could gaze at the Eiffel for hours on end,” said Cabiladas.

“I had taken so many pictures of the Eiffel Tower that I was slowly getting jaded whenever I saw it. Until this different perspective of the world-famous landmark presented itself,” said Cabiladas.
Cabiladas headed for Vancouver with few expectations and very little knowledge about the city. Today, she considers her move to Vancouver as the best decision she could have made. “Vancouver’s outdoor activities, its scenery, and the multi-cultural environment make this city one-of-a-kind,” she said.
Cabiladas’ adventurous spirit also prompted her to apply for a position with Campus Life, and she joined the team in her second semester. Her role has allowed Cabiladas to combine her love of photography and travel, taking her to nearby places such as Whistler, Fraser Valley, Squamish, and Bowen Island—her favorite trip yet. She is also now the official photographer for Campus Life.
When Cabiladas isn’t travelling, she enjoys getting to know her classmates, many of whom come from different parts of the world. In fact, the international student body is one of the things that surprised her most when she arrived at NYIT-Vancouver—and is now something she loves about the campus. “It has given me the opportunity to learn about many different cultures. Because NYIT-Vancouver is a more intimate campus, I feel like I can connect with my classmates on a much more personal level,” she explained.
Cabiladas, who expects to graduate in the Spring of 2018, hopes to stay in Vancouver. “My dream job would allow me to travel all around the world, but realistically, it would have to be in public relations or marketing because they both involve interacting with a lot of people, which is something I enjoy and comes easily to me,” she said. “The reason why I am constantly engaging in campus activities is because I cherish the interactions that I create with others. I learn something from my fellow students every day, and I am grateful for that.”
