Which Cardio Machine Should You Use?

Exercise physiologist and Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Alexander Rothstein, Ed.D., shares his insight with GQ in an article detailing whether using the treadmill or elliptical is best for reaching one’s fitness goals. While both pieces of exercise equipment make for an effective cardio workout, each have nuances that make them more suitable for different individuals.

Young people tend to take their mobility for granted, Rothstein says, “but as we age, people start to not lift their feet as high, and they’re not as clean with their gait. So to [run or walk] on something like a treadmill is a wonderful idea.”

Rothstein suggests splitting one’s time between different machines to curb boredom and encourage consistency in achieving fitness goals. “It’s just a different mental vibe, and it can really help with adherence.”
