Varghese: Diesel is Just Too Dangerous
In an op-ed published in Newsday, Associate Professor of Nursing Jessica Varghese, Ph.D., advocates for a full transition from diesel-run school buses to electric vehicles in New York. She writes that several Long Island communities are employing electric school buses, with 229 in use across the state and 825 more on the way. By state requirement, all school bus fleets must be fully zero-emission by 2035.
“[Diesel fuel exhaust is] linked to serious physical health issues like asthma and cancer, and brain development problems, putting students’ health and academic achievement at risk. Diesel Is just too dangerous for our children and communities.”
