March 2, 2026

Long Island Press features New York Tech student entrepreneurs Nigel Oommen and Johnathan Wheeler as they claimed the top prize of $1,000 for their startup company, Edvana, a voice-activated classroom assessment engine.

At the inaugural Intercollegiate Startup Pitch-Off, hosted by Accelerate Long Island and held on the Long Island campus’ Startup Tech Central, student entrepreneurs from universities across Long Island gathered before investors and judges to deliver 60-second pitches about their startups.

“It feels great to win. Me and my partner put in a lot of work,” Wheeler said at the Pitch-Off. Oommen added, “If there’s leadership in the community to foster ideas on Long Island, we can make anything happen.”
