Professor Shares Tips to Reduce Grocery Spending

Newsday quoted Deborah Y. Cohn, professor of marketing and management, in an article about reducing grocery bills. While many experts recommend buying in bulk to save money, research shows people tend to use products faster if they have more of them on hand, Cohn explained. “Sometimes it makes sense to buy smaller quantities. You’ll have less waste,” she noted.

Before heading to the store, she also advised shoppers to take an inventory of what’s already in the fridge and pantry and “make a spreadsheet…and decide everything you’re going to eat during the week.” Once there, consumers should stick to this list and plan to “get in and get out,” said Cohn, noting that more time spent inside of the store often leads to higher spending.
