Physical Therapist: Exercise Caution with Neck-Stretching Kits
Associate Professor of Physical Therapy Mark Gugliotti, D.P.T., is quoted in a WebMD article about the growing neck traction, or cervical traction, trend. Cervical traction involves applying gentle force to the neck to stretch the muscles and ligaments. Sometimes performed using a device resembling a hammock for the head, the treatment is used to relieve pain, improve range of motion, and treat various conditions affecting the cervical spine. While consumers can purchase over-the-door traction kits to use on days when they can’t attend physical therapy, Gugliotti notes these at-home kits shouldn’t be patients’ first option.
“Patients should be seen initially by a physical therapist for traditional traction. This will help determine if these home kits are safe and effective for the patient,” he says.
