Medical Expert Shares Winter Health Tips

December 2, 2025

NYITCOM-Arkansas Site Dean Shane Speights, D.O., offers his expertise in an interview detailing best practices for staying safe during prolonged periods outside in winter weather.

As seen on MSN.com, and originally featured on KAIT (channel 8) News in Arkansas, Speights informs readers that temperatures under 50 degrees Fahrenheit can cause illness, but avoiding cotton and wearing a water- or windproof external layer can serve as a preventative measure. He also notes that cold-related illnesses often begin with numb hands or feet, as they are furthest from the heart.

“Regular breaks are a good idea, certainly in cold, wet weather,” Speights advises. “Warm liquids are good for you, and you want to make sure you stay hydrated.”
