Medical Expert Advises on Food Poisoning Recovery

Woman’s World has featured College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) Associate Professor of Family Medicine Matthew Heller, D.O., in an article about the dangers of food poisoning—that is, foodborne illness. While most cases clear up in a day or two with proper rest and diet, the experience can be uncomfortable.

Typically caused by bacteria contamination due to undercooked meat or poor food prep hygiene, food poisoning can cause a range of symptoms including nausea, stomach cramps, and fever.

“Additional food poisoning symptoms can develop if a person becomes dehydrated,” notes Heller. Dehydration symptoms include dizziness, fatigue, and feeling faint, among others. To help recover, resting is important. “Your body uses a lot of energy to fight off the illness,” Heller explains. “Resting allows your body to focus on the healing process during the recovery.”
