How Cycling Compares to Running and Swimming

Alexander Rothstein, instructor and coordinator of the exercise science program, is featured in a Bicycling magazine story that analyzes how cycling compares to other methods of cardio, such as running and swimming. Rothstein explains that, while cycling is a low-impact activity, much like swimming, it tends to result in more localized muscle fatigue in the legs compared to other forms of cardiovascular exercise, making it more challenging for many people to achieve a high heart rate. As such, cycling tends to be less calorically expensive, and it may take longer to burn as many calories as one would while running.

“That being said, it is still an excellent calorie burner and may be easier for a beginner to start compared with running, or it could be a good combination when used with other aerobic exercises,” says Rothstein.
