Fitness Expert Featured in Interval Walking Story

Peloton’s blog, The Output, featured insight from Alexander Rothstein, Ed.D., assistant professor of exercise science, in an article about interval walking, a low-impact workout that alternates periods of high-intensity power walking with periods of recovery walking. One popular version of this training involves doing three minutes of moderate walking followed by three minutes of higher-intensity walking, repeated for five rounds and a total of 30 minutes. As Rothstein explained, to continue reaping the most benefits from their workouts, walkers should continuously monitor their perceived intensity and become comfortable with safely challenging themselves.

“Being able to make the exercise intense enough to push yourself while still being able to maintain this intensity for three consecutive minutes is not always easy to do, but with practice, you will improve your ability to self-monitor and will also increase your tolerance to higher-intensity bouts of exercise,” he said.

To ensure walkers continue to push their limits, Rothstein suggested walking at a faster pace or adding inclines.
