The Scope: A Medical School Podcast

November 15, 2019

In October, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) launched its first podcast: The Scope.

Envisioned by Jerry Balentine, D.O., dean of NYITCOM and vice president for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs, The Scope is tailor-made for medical students and offers practical advice to help them navigate their formative medical school years.

“This unique podcast is designed specifically for medical students as they progress through their personal journey in medical school,” said Balentine. “Through podcast episodes, our listeners will learn about exciting new health and wellness initiatives, cutting-edge medical research and technology, and how to effectively navigate medical school.”

The first episode, which aired on October 24 and was hosted by Susan Payette, director of Student Professionalism and Special Projects, featured an interview with NYITCOM alumna Jacqueline Segelnick (D.O. ’19). While she was a student, Segelnick created a cookbook to help future physicians easily prepare healthy meals while juggling the demands of medical school. The episode focused on the concept of culinary medicine, a new evidence-based field that blends the art of food and cooking with the science of medicine. It also featured interviews with Balentine and Patricia Happel, D.O., associate professor of family medicine and advisor to NYITCOM’s Culinary Medicine Club.

The Scope is co-managed by Payette and Dost Khalique, director for NYITCOM’s Academic Technologies Group, and will regularly feature new hosts and guest speakers, including NYITCOM students, alumni, faculty, and staff. New episodes will air monthly, with additional relevant discussions as needed.
