NYIT Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Junius Gonzales, M.D., M.B.A., received a 2019 Diversity in Business award from Long Island Business News. These awards are designed to highlight the outstanding achievements of business leaders of diverse ethnic backgrounds and those with disabilities, as well as those who actively support the growth of diversity and equality in the community. Gonzales and several other leaders from a variety of organizations across Long Island were honored at an awards ceremony on April 16.

A profile of Gonzales appeared in a special section of Long Island Business News featuring all recipients of Diversity in Business Awards 2019. In addition to highlighting his significant professional experience in higher education, the profile included Gonzales’ substantial research funding from multiple federal agencies and private funders, including a research grant from the Centers for Disease Control to adapt an evidence-based intervention for Latinos with chronic medical diseases and depression. It also noted his commitment to equality of opportunity through education and desire to give back by serving on the boards of various nonprofits, arts organizations, and service groups.

When asked about what individuals can do to promote equality in the business sphere, Gonzales said, “Always being attentive to non-differences can lead to strength. Every day, think about and reflect on self and possible ‘broad’ assumptions.” Additionally, in commenting on what he considers a successful day, it’s when “good solutions are proposed and acted on to help NYIT students and more.”
