Three NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences students are working on enhancing their résumés this summer.
Computer science major Constanza Cabrera and master’s candidates Nicholas Cariello (B.S. ’18) (majoring in computer science) and Vignesh Harish (majoring in information, network, and computer security) are all spending their summer break interning at IBM.
In between their day-to-day responsibilities, the students participated in the IBM Hackathon, which was held for the company’s interns from July 11 to 13. Over the three days, 400 contestants in 70 teams participated in the challenge.
The competition featured four categories: Cognitive/Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, BYOT (bring your own technology), and Blockchain. Cabrera and Harish participated in the Cybersecurity category and Cariello competed in Cognitive/AI.
In the end, Cabrera and Harish’s team came in first place. “[Our] squad put in an insane amount of effort and worked continuously for 60+ hours. The majority of us slept between zero and five hours during the entirety of the competition,” said Cabrera and Harish. “At the end of the challenge, all of the effort we put in paid off. We won in the Cybersecurity category.”
