Engaging New Students, Virtually

April 15, 2020

While the global pandemic is disrupting the completion of this academic year, it is not stopping New York Tech from engaging prospective students with a high level of personal touch—virtually, of course.

A new customized video, personalized for each undergraduate student admitted to the university, is a major component of the university’s virtual engagement outreach. The video, delivered via email and text, gives them a brief, informative look at life as a New York Tech student.

Emily Tafur, a graduate student in the Department of Communication Arts, narrates the video and takes students around campus, showing off a personalized student ID and sweatshirt as well as sharing a glimpse into a classroom in their field of study and other surprises. One scene congratulates scholarship recipients on their awards and reminds them to complete their FAFSA if they have not already done so.

Although this project was planned before the COVID-19 pandemic, the video was launched at a perfect time as potential members of the incoming class can get an up-close-and-personal glimpse of campus when in-person events and tours cannot be held.

“Now, more than ever, we hope our admitted students are able to get excited about their future college experience at New York Tech,” said Briana Bronchick, director of student communications for Enrollment Management. Admissions engaged Idomoo, a leader in native personalized video, to work with them on this project.

Throughout the recruitment cycle, the Office of Enrollment Management has expanded its personalized outreach to connect with prospective students, applicants, and admitted students. Touchpoints include highly personalized event invitations and emails, and each student is assigned a dedicated admissions counselor to extend the customized approach even further.

New York Tech is providing dozens of virtual events, recordings, tours, and experiences for students in the midst of making their college decisions, including live Q&A chats with faculty, financial aid, and student support services staff, as well as one-on-one appointments. In addition, early, virtual registration options are available for undergraduate students starting Friday, April 10.
