Bears Court Victory

December 8, 2015

The NYIT women's volleyball team led by Coach Gail Wasmus (M.P.S. '80) has won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Region Championship for the first time in program history. The Bears swept Bridgeport on Dec. 5 for the title and notched their 28th win, tying the overall program's most-wins record. It was also the team's first time competing in the NCAA East Region Semifinals, a berth won from defeating top-seeded Adelphi University in the semifinals on Dec. 4.

Karolina Moderova (business marketing major), Emily Mankowski (business management major), and Kate Brock (nursing major) each reached double-digit kill numbers with 14, 13, and 10, respectively. The three attackers, along with Allison Fowler (mechanical engineering major) who paced the offense with 38 assists, earned spots on the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

Victory is sweet for Wasmus in her 30th season as head coach of the women's volleyball team.

The Bears are headed for another first—an appearance at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Tournament on Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Tampa, Florida, where they take on Palm Beach Atlantic in the National Quarterfinal Game. Tune in to a live-streamed broadcast of the competition on game day.
