School of Management Seeks Students Who #WageAgainstTheGap

March 10, 2017

In a first-of-its-kind effort, NYIT School of Management has launched a scholarship with the aim of raising awareness about the gender wage gap, the difference in average pay between men and women in the United States. The School of Management and industry sponsors including Bank of America will fund the $7,000 scholarship, which represents 21 percent of NYIT’s annual tuition. The gender wage gap is calculated at 21 percent because men in the U.S. are paid $21 more per $100 than women in similar jobs, according to the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee.

Junior accounting major Samantha DeGaray said, “The Gender Wage Gap Scholarship is a great idea because it allows students to raise awareness for the gender wage gap while working towards a financial incentive. As a student pursuing a career in business, I feel it’s important that business organizations reward their employees based on contributions and work ethic rather than gender.”

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants—male or female—must share a brief video that shows how they will combat gender inequality in the workplace. Entrants must tag their videos #WageAgainstTheGap and post their entry on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or Twitter. Videos can include any kind of content that can get the message across in less than two minutes.

Jess Boronico, dean of the School of Management said, “We advocate for the principle of equality, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, country of origin, or other characteristics. Through the Gender Wage Gap Scholarship, as well as other NYIT School of Management activities, we show our commitment to this principle as a core element of our beliefs, our values, and our identity as a global institution.”
