Navigating a Breast Cancer Diagnosis

October 26, 2026

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Liat Jarkon, D.O., psychiatrist and director of the Center for Behavioral Health, spoke to News12 about the emotional impact of receiving a breast cancer diagnosis.

Jarkon shared that receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is likely to bring up feelings of depression and anxiety.

“The key to all of this—anyone going through this journey—is self-care,” said Jarkon. She recommends keeping a positive attitude, sticking to routines, getting exercise, and maintaining good sleep hygiene. It’s also important to know when to ask for help, whether it’s emotional help from friends and family, or working with a professional.
