Take the Stairs Next Time

August 13, 2026

Exercise physiologist and Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Alexander Rothstein, Ed.D., is featured in an Everyday Health article about the benefits of regularly climbing stairs. According to research, those who swap elevators and escalators for the staircase are about 40 percent less likely to die of heart disease, and near 25 percent less likely to die at any earlier age. Rothstein says the stairs offer an extra—and beneficial—challenge to the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems, and the ability to walk up stairs is an important one to maintain throughout life.

“Stairs tend to be challenging for just about everybody to a greater extent than, say, walking,” he says.
