Newsday Highlights New York Tech’s Student Support
A Newsday article detailing how Long Island universities are setting up their students for success features New York Tech. Director of Academic Success and Enrichment Tadiyos Gebre, along with computer science graduate student Keerthi Kapavarapu, are highlighted for their work with the university’s Peer Success GUIDE Program, which assigns every incoming student with a peer success guide—an upperclassman who can offer academic advice as well as social support.
Gebre says that the program is crucial for new students’ successful integration into campus life, because while they might go to their professors or other staff for certain concerns, “there are a lot of things where they may feel more comfortable reaching out to a peer.”
Kapavarapu, a peer success guide herself, is paying it forward in her role, as she remembers how helpful it was to have a patient, caring person by her side during her first year at New York Tech. A student she once supported is now also a guide: “I used to teach him, and now he has become somebody that we teach [others] together.”
