Luis E. Navia specializes in ancient Greek philosophy. He is the author of more than 20 books on philosophy and the teachings of ancient philosophers, including Diogenes of Sinope: The Man in the Tub and Socrates: A Life Examined. Navia has taught courses and seminars on the fundamentals of philosophy, modern and ancient philosophy, ethics, the Presocratic philosophers, and the Cynics.
In addition to his role as a faculty member, Navia has occupied a number of positions in the administration, including chair of the Social Sciences Department and the deanship of the College of Arts & Sciences.
Navia received his Ph.D. in philosophy from New York University in 1973 and pursued further research through a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship at Princeton University. He has also served on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, beginning in 1975.
