Class Naming Convention

The class name consists of three parts: subject, course number, and section.

Meaning

Example

Subject

Academic area of study.

MATH – Mathematics
BIOL – Biology

Course number

Generally this represents the  academic level of the course:

  • 100 level is taken by students in their first year or higher
  • 200 level is taken by students in their second year or higher, etc

MATH 115 - Introductory Concepts of Mathematics BIOL 210 – Human Gross Anatomy

Section

This indicates where classes meet and a section number.

  • The first character typically refers to campus
  • The numbers in the second and third position denote the section number such as 01, 02, etc
  • The character in the fourth position may be the letter D or L.
    • L indicates that this is a laboratory class.

Use the section naming convention as a general guide.

W – Old Westbury, Long Island

M – New York City, Manhattan

F – Online

W01 – this section meets in Long Island (Old Westbury, NY) and it is section #1

M02 – this section meets in New York City (Manhattan) and it is section #2
