5th Annual Chi Alpha Epsilon Induction
On the afternoon of April 14, eight NYIT Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) students and one honorary member were inducted into the Zeta Lambda chapter of Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) National Honor Society.  During the 5th annual induction ceremony eight current XAE members received jeweled upgrades to their pins based on excelling academically after their initial induction. Zennabelle Sewell, Associate Dean of Campus Life gave the keynote address which focused on the importance of hard work. She stressed that there is no such thing as luck. “Luck is simply preparedness meeting opportunity.” She urged all students to continue to work hard and be prepared when opportunities arises. Dean Sewell ended her keynote address with a powerful poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.”

This year’s honorary inductee was HEOP’s own Carla Freeman. Carla serves as the Assistant Director and Counselor for HEOP and in her role she helps guide students through academic, financial, and personal challenges. Carla has dedicated over fourteen years of service to HEOP and remains committed to empowering students to achieve a college education, while aiding them to be successful members of the NYIT and larger community. Throughout her time she has touched the lives of hundreds of students and continues to be an integral part of their journey. Ms. Freeman expressed her gratitude for being selected to join this prestigious group. “It is an honor to be called honorable”. Honorable is the title given to all XAE members after they are inducted into the group.

Inductees shared their stories of struggle and success, many of which brought the room to tears. Proud parents, friends, family, and NYIT staff and faculty were honored to be a part of these students’ special day of recognition. Induction into XAE is no easy fete. Many honorees are the first in their families to pursue a college degree and have overcome significant obstacles in the process. This day is a true testament to the success of opportunity programs like HEOP. XAE President Moona Nadeem spoke of the transformative effect of being a member and President of this group. She also discussed XAE’s numerous community service initiatives and encouraged the new inductees to take part.

The ceremony ended on an emotional note as well as HEOP Director Deepa Bhalla was honored for her years of service to the program and XAE at NYIT. The HEOP staff presented her with an engraved clock which read “To Deepa Bhalla, with love from your HEOP Family”. We wish all of our HEOP family continued success.

Meeting Missionaries
On Thursday, April 2nd Arthur O Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) students Aiden Mohammad and Bryan Diaz who is also a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity Incorporated (TKE), joined HEOP counselor Vanderie Vielie on a trip to the local soup kitchen at St. Paul the Apostle.   This was Aiden’s second trip to the soup kitchen. The students of HEOP and Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) have been offering their support to the soup kitchen once a semester for the past four years.  On this trip they met a group of over a dozen young adults from North Carolina who were visiting New York on a missionary trip. St. Paul the Apostle was one of several soup kitchens they had volunteered at during their short stay in the city.  After some socializing with the visitors, everyone got to work helping to set up the soup kitchen and organize the soup kitchen pantry. We look forward to our next visit in the Fall semester!

HEOP Homework Helpers

On Wednesday, March 11th members of Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society (XAE), the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity Incorporated (TKE) volunteered their time with the Page Turners Homework Helpers.  The primary goal of Page Turners is to provide homeworkassistance to grade school children in the Hell's Kitchen community. Upon arriving at the Metro Baptist Church, NYIT students and staff member Vanderie Vielie met other volunteers from the Page Turners program and received a brief but thorough orientation. Shortly after the students came bouncing in to complete homework in a variety of subjects. HEOP student Kayla Kellman helped her tutee with a project focused on South Africa’s current president and main export of goods. HEOP student and TKE member Bryan Diaz had a great connection with his tutee who he said reminded him of himself at that age. After the homework was finished, HEOP student and XAE member Dorrant Anderson engaged in a lively game of chess with several eager students.
